Y’all… last year I read a book by Rachel Gillig called The Knight and the Moth. It was excellent. Not gonna lie, I started out not sure if I even wanted to finish it. BUT, I made it through the first couple chapters and I was hooked.
Without spoilers, it’s about a young king and his friends trying to establish rule in a superstitious kingdom. They go to the religious leaders(?) of the realm for a divining, or a reading of their future. They go on some adventures with one of the diviners and there is love, deception, murder, intrigue…
Then… there is a HUGE CLIFFHANGER. And… when I read this book… The sequel had YET to be released. So I was up a creek with no paddle literature-ally.
Fast forward to September, the book comes out. Of course I wanted to listen to the audiobook and since I don’t like to spend ALL my money on audiobooks I use the free library app. And because I didn’t set it in my calendar I was like… 20th in line to listen to the sequel, The Knave and the Moon.
BUT. The folks on the library app in line ahead of me ALSO wanted to listen to the book immediately, so I only had to wait a month and a half for my turn.
Herein lies the tragedy.
I made it to chapter 9. 3 hours into the 12 hour tale. And the app STOPS WORKING! Not the entire app, but THIS chapter. It won’t play. I restart my phone, reach out to the app bot/helpdesk, report an issue. Nothing fixes it. So the next day I decide to try again. Still, nothing. So I skip to chapter 10. And it plays. In desperation to finish the story I decide to fill in the literary holes myself. And we move along.
Then comes chapter 15. Same issue.
It happened three times in total. Three. Times.
Three whole chapters that I am left to fill in the blanks. And I do. But I am mcBUMMED about it.
Thankfully this is a sequel but not an entire series, so I was happily able to tie up the lose ends by the books conclusion.
I also put my name in to borrow the e-reader version of the book just so I can fill in the blanks.
And I know this is such a first world problem and although disruptive it wasn’t life altering. But man… I have waited 5 months for this story! (And it was worth the wait.)
** I definitely wouldn’t label this as “dirty” as the SJM books, but there are some intimate scenes. Nothing super graphic, but still more than I would consider appropriate for teenagers. ALSO there is a lot of random cursing, that feels forced to me… but for whatever reason the author thought the use of the F word would add to the story. So this isn’t something I would listen to around children. For that alone I would think this book had an R rating. **
