Surviving A Terrible Boss

I don’t have a traditional boss, but I have before… and I have several friends who do. I have compiled a short list of ways to survive a terrible boss (when you’re too poor to quit).

  • Make a list of the good things they have done, so you can look back at it when you’re really steamed.
  • Follow all the social media accounts where people talk you through dealing with a difficult boss. They teach you proper language to come across as confident yet respectful.
  • Keep a file of all the inconsistencies and problems so that IF you get called into HR or questioned unfairly you can show them receipts.
  • Befriend the HR department
  • Know what your job description is and don’t start caving to irrational demands that are outside your scope.
  • Be really nice to everyone in the office, especially the janitorial staff.
  • Always keep your resume up to date
  • Work with a recruiter so there’s always someone else helping you look for the next best job.

I have heard that in modern day corporate America the best way to advance and earn more money is by changing jobs every two years. Rather than get a tiny raise after x time at an office gain experience, apply for new jobs every two years and get hired at a higher percentage than you currently have. Company loyalty is a thing of the past. Pensions? Who does those anymore? Unless you’re one of the lucky few you likely have a boss who doesn’t care about you at all. The idea that “we’re all a big family” here is laughable. Don’t fall for it. Don’t give your loyalty to someone undeserving.
