The Elephant In the Room

Hi, it’s me, I’M the elephant in the room. Yeah, I’m the friend of the friend. I’m the one that people talk to because they really want to talk to my friends. I’m the one people try to impress because they know my opinion matters to my friend. I’m the one that people include, because in doing so they will have access to my friend.

I can’t be mad about it. I’ve done it myself. It’s just a thing that happens. In school, at work, at church… I guess the positive thing is I can still be on good terms with people, even when they no longer have a relationship with my friend. I have made a lot of casual friends this way. But sometimes it doesn’t feel great.

Most recently there’s a guy at church (who I am not interested in, he is quite young) but he would only talk to me if my friend was right there. There are times when he would only acknowledge me when my friend TOLD him to. There are also times when he would pay for my food because he was paying for my friend’s food. But I would much rather be acknowledged and given basic respect over having my quesadilla paid for. Ya know?
