This is a book I had to wait several months to read because the hold list was so long on my library app. The first ten minutes were slow enough that I nearly stopped. I am so glad I didn’t!
This book was SO GOOD! It was a fresh take on fantasy. Somewhat predictable but not so predictable that I knew exactly how it would end. There was some steamy moments, but nothing so uncomfortable as ACOTAR. The hero was morally gray and handsome. The sidekick was as lovable as Gurgi from The Black Cauldron and as important as Smeagol/Gollum from LOTR. The romance was enjoyable, but not the entire plot of the story.
The way magic works is interesting but not so convenient it’s annoying. Like, “Oh of course this one magic law will fix everything in the end.” More like, “These tools work in a certain way and it’s super handy to have them, but they can be stopped and they don’t conveniently make the entire plot work.”
It took me less than two days to listen to the whole thing. (With some breaks in between because they used some language and I couldn’t listen to it around my niece.)
My biggest complaint is 1. The unnecessary foul language used. 2. The sequel doesn’t come out until NEXT SEPTEMBER and 3. The cliff hanger. When the book had ten minutes left and things looked like they were being tied up smoothly I knew… I KNEW disaster was about to strike.
I would say… 4/5 Stars.
