I took my little brother to see Superman yesterday. It does not star Henry Cavill, so I wasn’t super interested in seeing it… BUT… I was pleasantly surprised.
I have always liked superman because he’s a good person, was raised in Kansas, and doesn’t hate the world or America.
I had low expectations for this movie because I tend to dislike superhero movies. I also thought they might try to ruin superman and make him something he isn’t.
First the cons… The chaotic dog, cute but it came across as a joke. Endangerment of a baby, in lava, that was terrifying. There were lots of graphic-ish scenes that I had to look away because I don’t like seeing someone consumed with toxic sludge (into the eyes, lungs, etc…) They played superman like a video game (literally). The portrayal of his parents in Kansas. Yes, it’s funny because older folks don’t understand tech. But they gave his mom an accent and it was so… odd.
Things that were meh… Lois Lane. The actress was fine, but I didn’t feel the chemistry. The other superheroes. Mr. Fantastic was Fantastic, but the Green Lantern dude, similar to the dog, was all jokes and no substance. The surprise guest at the end was absurd, however I don’t know if there are movies the predate this one that would explain her sudden and fleeting appearance.
Things they did well. Superman. He did a good job. He was very handsome. He had that air of patriotism and love of mankind that an empathetic superhero needs. The plot. The storyline was pretty good. The ending didn’t disappoint. I don’t think there was much if any cursing, which I appreciate. (But I did step out to use the restroom a couple times.)
There were only two other people in the theater, so that was a HUGE bonus. Tate had fun, which is the important thing. And it wasn’t a cartoon! So that’s a fun bonus for me.
I would give this movie 3/5 stars.
