When I was a freshman in high school I started playing tennis. Not because I like it but because I had to choose a sport and the tennis season is the shortest of all the athletic seasons. (And half the time it would get rained out.)
When I was about a freshman in high school we also had a young 20 something at church who started teaching the teen Bible class. His name was Richard. I didn’t like Richard. I don’t know if it was because my parents liked him a lot, or because I thought he was a pretentious nerd, or because I have an issue with authority (or lack of authority because he was so young?) Anyway… Richard and I were NOT bffs.
One night I went to church with green eye shadow. Richard said, “What happened to your eye?!” Implying that I had a black eye. Without missing a beat I said, “I got hit with a ball in tennis and I’m trying to cover it up.” Did I get a black eye from tennis? No. Did I tell a complete and total lie because of discomfort? Yes. Was it wrong? Yes. Do I think that he was probably getting a dig at me because I was so rude during Bible class? Probably… Did I deserve it? Probably…
Have I ever successfully used eyeshadow? Probably not, but once every few months I try…
