I have long been suspicious of microwaves. I have also long had one regardless of my suspicions. Until a couple weeks ago.
Two weeks ago my little sister was staying the night and tried to make popcorn. There was a horrible smell and the outlet sparked. I unplugged the microwave, thinking it was the problem. I took it as the sign that my microwave needed to go and I should be a microwave free house.
The following day, after disposing of said microwave, I plugged in something to the outlet. It started smoking. Oops. The outlet was the issue, not the microwave.
I quickly flipped the breaker to off and called my dad. He tested the outlet and replaced it for me. (Thank you God for dads and their superman abilities!)
Unfortunately (or fortunately) I had already gotten rid of the microwave. So… I continue to not have one. It made a HUGE difference in the feel of my kitchen. I have so much more counter space. I moved my kitchenaid mixer to that corner and now I can breathe a little easier. It just feels more balanced.
My sister is annoyed because I have to make popcorn the old fashioned way. But I love it. I use the stove more. I use the air fryer more. I use the oven more. I use my kettle more. I reheat my food and it doesn’t get rubbery. It’s a beautiful thing, the microwave free life.
Convenience comes at a cost y’all. In the case of the microwave it costs our health and the integrity of our food.
I’m not saying I’m above ever using a microwave again… but I feel peace of mind no longer having one in my house. Baby steps.
