When I was a kid my Sunday school teacher would record tapes for us. 6 hour VHS tapes full of the greatest kids tv shows. (We did’t have many channels when I was little.)
Some of the faves were…
- Gullah Gullah Island: That bright yellow pollywog was the cutest. My favorite episode was when they saved the sea turtle eggs.
- Rupert: The polar bear kid who went on adventures.
- The Busy World of Richard Scary: I like to collect these books for my niece and nephews.
- Little Bear: This is one I am desperately trying to get my niece to enjoy because I love it. It’s also a winner because it isn’t over stimulating and the message is wholesome. Little Bear gets into mischief but he also speaks respectfully to his parents (unlike Caillou or Pete the Cat).
- Barney and Friends: CLASSIC (some of the best songs…)
- Sesame Street: Especially the holiday specials. My favorite one was the new year celebration.
- Bear in the Big Blue House: My niece likes this one a lot.
Now my Grandma also recorded tapes for us. Lots of westerns, Doris Day movies but the very best and funniest and most memorable thing was…
- The Carol Burnett Show
That’s probably where my love of classic movies stemmed from. (Although I don’t know if my faves can be considered classics…) This was my introduction to Tim Conway, comedy LEGEND. He is unrivaled in physical comedy. When he played the little old man who could barely move but would get caught in conveyor belts or ceiling fans or elevator doors… I laughed till I cried.
