I have invented some new words when talking with my nephews. One of them is pestery. My oldest nephew is a little ball of energy and he loves to run and leap into your arms (or onto your back, head, arm…) I always tell him, “Dadgum, you’re so pestery today!” I say it with affection, but it can be overwhelming.
Something I have noticed (and been taught) about kids over the years is that when they want attention they want it NOW. So, if a kid is acting particularly obnoxious it’s probably a cry for attention. They know if they behave in a wily manner you will give them attention faster than if they are well behaved. So for that immediate interaction they will do something that stresses you out.
It is not easy to deal with. It can be super stressful and even angering. This summer I hope to be more present with the kids and give them appropriate amounts of my attention so that they feel their cups filled up without resorting to terrorist like behavior towards one another.
They also need an outlet for all that energy, so we will be doing lots of outdoor activities. Someone recommended I sent them outside to run laps around the house when they’re especially rambunctious. Maybe we can build an obstacle course!
Let me know your best tips/tricks to keep kids entertained in the summer without screens.
