K drama review!
Spoilers ahead! Don’t get mad at me… this is your final warning!
When the Phone Rings… Yoo Yeon Seok… if you don’t know him, you’re missing out. Perhaps the handsomest man in Korea, he is the male lead in this heart pounding romance.
Plot: Yoo Yeon Seok is married to Chae Soo Bin. It is a political marriage, they don’t speak or even seem to like one another. He is the spokesman for the president and she is a sign language interpreter. (She is not deaf, but does not speak because of a traumatic event in her childhood.)
Their marriage is a secret. Everyone knows they are married, but nobody knows to whom. She thinks it is because he is ashamed to have a disabled wife, when really it’s for her protection.
At the beginning of the show Chae Soo Bin is abducted and held at knife point. The attacker calls her husband from a burner phone and tells him, “I’m going to kill your wife.” Yeon Seok thinks that it’s a prank because nobody knows who his wife is. So he calls his mother in law and asks if his wife is there. The mother in law thinks she needs to cover for her daughter, so she says, “Yes.” Yeon Seok gets back on the phone with the killer and says, “Call me back when you have a corpse.”
Soo Bin hears this and becomes enraged. You find out she CAN speak! She wrecks her car and gets rid of the attacker. She steals his phone and returns home like nothing happened.
Later Yeon Seok gets another phone call. This time the attacker starts telling him family secrets and wants to blackmail him to divorce his wife. Yeon Seok refuses and the killer says, “You don’t even like your wife. She almost died yesterday and you didn’t care. Why do you want to stay married?” Yeon Seok then goes to find his wife and checks her for wounds. Upon realizing his wife was actually under attack he becomes enraged. He tells his team to find out who this blackmailer is.
You then find out (as the audience) that Soo Bin has the phone and is the one demanding a divorce.
Why can she speak? Does Yeon Seak actually like his wife? Who was the original attacker?
That is the first two episodes.
It was SUCH A GREAT DRAMA!
There are only 12 episodes. It was on netflix, but not made BY netflix so there wasn’t any stupid political stuff added. I will say, the last 30 minutes of episode 12 was stupid… but they redeem themselves by the end. I don’t know if it would be a Korean drama if they didn’t add an unnecessary time leap and an extra abduction. But that’s ok because it was 95% amazing.
If you’re snowed in like I was a couple weeks ago you should DEFINITELY add this to your playlist.
