Kind vs Nice

In my day to day life I come into contact with people who are kind and people who are nice. Some people are both. But these words are NOT synonyms (in my opinion).

Kind: adjective of a sympathetic or helpful nature; gentle, forbearing, affectionate, loving

Nice: adjective polite, pleasing, agreeable

To me someone who is nice is nice because they want people to consider them nice. It’s often for appearance sake. Or because it’s what they’re supposed to do. Not necessarily because they have a desire to help. “I’m a nice person. I’m a good person.” I help others even when I don’t want to because it’s the nice thing to do.

The idea of KINDness is more of a genuine vibe. Warmth. Love. A true desire to help because people WANT to help, not because they want to be seen as nice.

There are all sorts all over the world. When I’m in the midwest I feel like there is a real sense of kindness. When I’m in the south it’s more niceness. When I’m in the North West it’s less friendly, but very kind. They will help a person in need, but they won’t advertise it. They don’t do small talk, but they will give you the shirt off their back.

There are good people everywhere, but there’s definitely different vibes for different parts of the country.
