I have compiled a list of things that should be taught in schools that are definitely not. Most of them are life skill, some of them are just personal preference. All of them are useful.
- Taxes
- Student loans and their repercussions
- How to change a tire, car oil, car lights, license plates, etc…
- Mental health, somatic exercises, coping mechanisms
- Home ec should be a requirement for all (cooking, cleaning, etc…)
- The history of seed oils
- Every school should have a garden where students are required to grow/tend/harvest/plant their own fruits and vegetables
- Basics of animal husbandry (milking a cow/goat, feeding animals, brushing a horse, etc…)
- Whistling
Whistling is the one I want to focus on today. Why? Because it could save your life.
Does anyone else have a mom who can do that ear piercing, explosive, train like whistle? Just me?
My mom can whistle like a freight train and get our attention from great distances. Her brothers taught her when she was young.
Do you have any idea how helpful that would have been in my life?
I have tried to learn, but to no avail.
I was thinking it would be a handy way to call the cows home when you need to lure them into the lot and administer medications. You could get the attention of someone at a distance who you are trying to meet up with. You could scare away a bear that is rummaging through your trash, or call the chickens away from the creek bed or the neighbor’s property line…
Whistling… it could save a life. Start learning now.
