I recently got a refund check in the mail from the federal government. No explanation. No letter. Nothing. Just a check.

I was concerned it was a scam, so I checked online and verified the check info. It was real.

I read online that if you get a mysterious check and aren’t sure what to do you can wait and usually they will send a follow up letter explaining.

The thing that was so weird was I just recently filed my taxes because I filed an extension back in April.

So I waited… as suggested.

Last week I finally got a follow up letter. Allegedly I “overpaid” my 2023 taxes and was issued this refund. I’m not entirely sure this is accurate. I’m actually a little concerned they’re going to ask for it back soon. So it’s sitting in my savings account.

But the point is… should you receive a mysterious check from Uncle Sam… hold on to it until further explanation is offered.
