Jr High Survival Guide

Subbing has been hard these days. Partly because this year’s sixth grade class is feral, and partly because it requires meal prep.

This year, the things that have most helped me keep my sanity during these long jr high days are the following…

  • Food, specifically protein. This morning I made protein oatmeal, and I packed a lunch of chicken and potatoes. I also have a protein bar in my bag (though it is smashed to smithereens.)
  • Caffeine. I make myself two chai lattes that I keep in my thermos water bottles. I nurse them throughout the day, even after lunch. I usually try to avoid caffeine after 2-3 o’clock, but days like this require extra fuel.
  • A decent book. Self explanatory. Books are needed in all areas of life.
  • My computer, so I can work on blog posts while the kids do their worksheets. (Today’s assignment is labeling maps of the US and answering trivia questions about US Geography.)
  • Excedrin. I often get headaches. Especially when I’m doing something I don’t want to do. Today I didn’t want to work. Alas, I am poor.
  • A water bottle. This one might be obvious, but sometimes subbing is boring and literally all you have to do is sip a drink while you watch the varmints take a test. I actually do a great job staying hydrated on days that I sub. (At least in the jr. high/high school.)

Today is pretty quiet/hands off. I am thankful. In two hours I get a lunch break and in four hours I get an afternoon break. I have had time to do my scripture reading, make progress in my book, write a few blog posts and eat my oatmeal. Let’s hope the rest of the day goes as smoothly.
