I had my first teaching assignment of the 2024/2025 school year. It was for my preferred class, 7th Grade History. Why is this my preferred class? Because kids in the junior high need less supervision. I can go over a lesson with them and help when needed, but for the most part they can work independently. This means I can read, work on my own projects, or do things to help the teacher (like grade tests or papers).
It was within the first couple weeks of school starting, so people were still getting used to the new routine. It was pretty simple. They had to answer some questions about Europe (which were easily found on a map) and then play geography games online. I reviewed the answers with the kids. The hardest part was pronouncing Reykjavik. (Rake-yuh-vik?)
I did not sleep the night before. Not at all. I TRIED to sleep for many hours. But it got to be so late that I was afraid if I did sleep I would OVER sleep and then be late and then get in trouble and lose out on a day’s pay. So once it got to be 6:00 a.m. I just got up. I made some hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, iced chai, tried on a couple outfits that would let me be comfortable but look teacher-y. I got to school at 7:30 (unheard of for me… I am NEVER early. Anywhere.)
The day was uneventful. Some kids were loud. Some kids were quiet. They were all able to do the work. I got some chapters of my book read, made some IG posts for my business account, and ate my lunch. Overall it was a good first day.
