When I was a kid, I would check out dozens of books at a time from the library. One summer I read every Nancy Drew book in their collection. Another summer it was the babysitters club. I remember one day sitting in my living room with 10 chapter books, Simple chapter books, and just reading nonstop.
There was a summer reading program that I was determined to win. Even though there were no winners, everybody got the same prizes. And then Jr High did accelerated reading, and I read more than anybody.
Reading a lot became a big part of my identity. And it was definitely quantity over quality when I looked back and think about the things I chose to read. I didn’t read classics, I didn’t read things that taught me lessons or skills. I read things that I liked and made me feel good.
That is a decision I have carried into adulthood (with a few self help books and religious commentaries worked in).
