Studio Ghibli Movie Review: Nausicaa, Valley of the Wind

This was a tough one for me. Why because it had so many things that I hate.

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

It’s set in a post apocalyptic world. (HATE) Giant monster bugs. (HATE) Space ships. (HATE) And a combination of modern science with medieval knights. (HATE)

Sci-Fi is not my thing. I love fantasy. I love magic. I love a love story. I hate apocalypse, end of the world, toxic sludge, modern meets medieval.

Truthfully I fast forwarded through most of this movie.

The animation was great. I felt super hopeful when I saw that the setting was a castle in a valley. Unfortunately that lasted for all of five minutes.

The princess of this land is able to fight and kill knights 4x her size, even though she only uses a staff, no magic, and is 16.

They are living in a valley outside a toxic forest full of man eating bugs and poisonous plants.

They are invaded by air ships and the king is killed. They take the princess prisoner, and while flying away they are attacked by a third country. The princess lands the ship, saving the invading princess and her companions.

While landing in the monster forest the princess saves the group from giant monster bugs by respecting them. Then she and the prince who attacked them get sucked into quicksand and wake up under the forest.

Long story short, they fear this poison that is all over the forest. But the princess had figured out secretly that the soil is poison, not the plants and spores and bugs.

The people in the valley are trying to burn away all the toxic plants (that aren’t really toxic) and cause a panic because the spores are spreading.

The princess slowly makes her way home and rescues the bugs from extinction by explaining that the soil is toxic, the spores and plants purify the air and the bugs can be their friends. She is killed but revived by the magic of bugs.

So this princess is a lot more upset by the possibility of killing bugs than she is about the death of her people. She also didn’t mourn her dad very long. Even the prince from the neighboring kingdom was more mournful at the death of his loved ones. (But not much more…)

Shia LeBeouf is the voice of the prince and Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid) voices his mother. Those are the only positive points.

If you like sci-fi you’ll likely love this cartoon. If not I would say don’t waste your time.
