Irrational Fears: Bridges

The fear of bridges is Gephyrophobia. In junior high I had to take a class that had a segment on bridges. I watched video after video of these bridges that were all wobbly and poorly made. Cars were driving across them as they shook and eventually collapsed. It made me fear something that I’d never considered before.

I am ok at driving across bridges that are short, or part of the interstate. Onramps and off-ramps. I don’t enjoy walking across them, but if they’re stable and don’t move I can handle it. The bridges that I really REALLY hate are the suspension bridges that wobble. Or rope bridges… I don’t like bridges that cross huge bodies of water. Like the drive from Mobile to Dauphin Island. It is a nightmare. Though, thinking now… That fear might be more about falling into the water than the bridge itself. The five minutes it takes to cross the Mississippi from Missouri into Tennessee… I always speed up and try to get over that bridge as fast as possible. It was my least favorite part of the drive to and from university.

Thankfully being in a land locked state I don’t often have to drive over large bodies of water. And there aren’t a ton of bridges in NE Kansas.
