Irrational Fears: Outer Space

I hate nothing so much as outer space. Science class is one of my least favorite things for this reason. How many models of the solar system can a person make in their educational career? The fear of outer space is called astrophobia.

I don’t understand why anyone would want to explore it. I don’t understand why we care about what the planets do or don’t have on them. I don’t care if there is life outside of earth. And I don’t care about people trying to explore the moon. I think it is all a huge waste of time and tax dollars.

I think space has been weaponized. Big names in the science community talk about space and its infinite blackness and make us feel obsolete. Human life is precious and valuable, but what is the point of anything if we are no more important than a meteor or a rock? We talk about Heaven, but where is heaven if we are just floating in infinite nothingness?

When I was a kid we watched this movie about a class of students that are exploring NASA and they accidentally get launched into space. The kids have to somehow bring the rocket ship home. At one point they’re running out of oxygen and almost die. They have a teacher with them and she goes out (I think) and has to retrieve an oxygen tank from the space station. It’s really terrifying. What a sad and lonely way to die. Floating away from earth in a tin can running out of oxygen where your body will surely remain forever because there’s no way to retrieve it and give you a proper burial.

I love the sun. I love the moon. I love the way people could and still can use the sky as a clock. If you track the placement of the moon every day for a year (or is it a season….) it makes the infinity symbol. I love that sailors used to use the North Star to navigate across the sea. I believe it was all made by God and nature works in a pattern and we can read that pattern to understand seasons and life cycles. But we’re told in school that space is chaos. Space is empty nothingness. Space is death.

I say earth is where we live so let’s be good stewards. Don’t litter. Don’t pollute. Invest in regenerative farming and plant some trees. And for Pete’s sake… don’t worry about outer space.
