I think one of the coolest ways we pass on traditions to our children is through music. Singing to your baby the songs you remember from childhood is such a simple pleasure.
I sing one of three things to my niece when Im rocking her to sleep, all taught to me by my mother.
A lullaby called By Oh Baby, In The Cherry Tree, and My Little Gray Kitty.
The lyrics literally go, “Bye oh bye oh baby baby bye oh bye…” on repeat. It’s like the song that never ends from Lamb Chops, only not obnoxious 😂
The next one goes, “Way up high in the cherry tree. if you look. you will see. Mother robin and babies 3. High up in the tree. See the branch as it’s swinging. Swinging. Swinging. Mother robin is singing. Singing her babies to sleep.” (And repeat)
Last song is a nursery rhyme I think. Some versions are dark, but my mom changed the lyrics to be happy. “My kitty my kitty my little gray kitty I hunted the place all around. I looked upstairs and under the chairs and nowhere could kitty be found.” It ends with the kitty either being drowned or found depending on your mood 😅
I love these songs because my mom sang them to me and her mom sang them to her and I imagine it went that way for several generations back.
What are your go to lullabies?
