Studio Ghibli Movie Review: Whispers of the Heart

I chose this as my next movie to watch/review because I heard it included Baron from The Cat Returns.

Unfortunately he didn’t play a huge role outside of his initial existence and legend… but it was still a sweet movie.

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

The female lead is a junior high girl is obsessed with reading. Her family wants her to study and keep house, but she just wants to read. As she checks out more and more books from the library she notices the name of one boy on each of the card logs. She imagines herself in love with the boy who shares her interest in books.

There is a love square, but it’s not key to the storyline. The female lead meets a boy who teases her. She goes to an antique shop and meets a nice old man and a cat named Muta. She sees a statue of Baron the cat from The Cat Returns. She hears about the legend of the statue from the old man.

Come to find out, the boy who teased her is the old man’s grandson. He is also the boy from the library books. It turns out he was trying to catch her attention all along, but because she ignored him he started borrowing books to catch her attention.

He dreams of being a violin maker and has plans to move to Italy. The female lead decides to become a writer and they encourage one another. They agree to attend high school and fulfill their dreams together, promising to one day get married.

It was a simple and sweet story. I was a little disappointed that Baron didn’t play a bigger role, but I like that the couple grows up together and plans to always be together.

2.5/5 stars. I might not watch it again, but I don’t regret seeing it.
