Making Things: Apple Cider Vinegar

I love making things. I love making pretty things and useful things and pretty, useful things.

This winter break I’ve attempted a few new projects in an attempt to keep my creative spark alive.

To start, I bottled some homemade vinegar. A few months back I had a bushel of apples from a friend and a bowl of sand hill plums from my aunt.

I made homemade Apple Cider Vinegar and homemade Plum Cider Vinegar.

Things used:

Gallon glass jar, fruit scraps, distilled water, sugar

Use 1 Tablespoon of sugar for every cup of water.

Add in all the apple scraps (or whatever fruit) including the core, pits, seeds, stems… all of it.

Put something on the top to hold the fruit under the water and keep it from molding.

Let it sit in a corner or cabinet for a month or three. (I think mine was sitting since September, and I bottled it in December.)

Strain out the fruit and bottle up what you have. It will smell tangy and fruity. You can test it with PH strips like these ones I got on Amazon.

I read ACV should have a ph level of 2 or 3. My ACV was at a 3, my plum vinegar was a 2.

I bottled some up for xmas gifts and stored the rest for myself. I heard that Bragg’s ACV was bought out by Katy Perry? Since I definitely don’t trusty any celebrities I thought making my own vinegar was a good skill to hone.

If you don’t have large jars at home you can alter the recipe measurements. You can also search yard sales or online auctions. My aunt got me some gallon jars for $1 a while back and they’ve come in handy for kombucha and vinegar.
