Parasympathetic Nervous System

(Info taken from my.clevelandclinic.org)

What is the parasympathetic nervous system? A network of nerves that helps your body relax after periods of stress or danger. You don’t have to think about controlling this system, it is automatic like breathing or the beating of your heart.

The parasympathetic nervous system helps control your body’s response during times of rest.

  • Limits the amount of light entering your eyes by constricting the pupils. This improves your close-up vision and causes tear production
  • It activates glands in the nose and mouth to help with digestion and breathing.
  • Tightens airway muscles to reduce the amount of work your lungs have to do
  • Lower your heartrate
  • Increases digestion, tells pancreas to make/release more insulin, breaks down sugar

I’m trying to learn more of these terms so that I understand my shrink at appointments without needing to google everything when I get home.
