About two years ago I bought a wood burning stove off the nextdoor app. I have always wanted one, but several years ago when we had that terrible winter a friend of mine went without power for 10 days. She survived and fed her family using their rain barrel store of water and the wood burning stove in their home. I decided that I needed an alternative heat source for emergencies and began hunting in earnest for a stove of my own.
I was going to buy a tiny one from Orschelns, but the nextdoor app proved most useful. For 1/3 the price of a new one (and for something 3x the size of the one I was eyeing) I got a wood burning stove. I can use it to cook and it will heat my home.
My dad and brothers recently installed the chimney for me and now there’s a hole in my ceiling. Then this week my dad installed the barrier needed between the wall/floor and fireproof tile. My older brother had leftover tile from his house build and is graciously letting me have it for this project. (He’s a designer and is way more stylish than I am.) So we have this cool hexagon tile now to line the floor and walls.
By the time this post is published I will hopefully have a fully functioning stove. This means my energy bill will drop significantly. Dad has several dead trees around the property that he’s been cutting for firewood.
I am so excited! It will be so cozy. We can roast hotdogs and make s’mores… It will make for some great holiday pictures. I can’t wait.
Once again, my dad and brothers are helping me majorly with this project. They always come through and help make my vision a reality. I don’t really have the words to say how much I appreciate them.
I can’t wait to share pictures and stories. I want to be cool like Hannah from Ballerina Farms and name my stove, so let me know your suggestions and stay tuned for some wood stove adventures.
