How Many Does A Small Town Need? Coffee Shop Edition

I live in a small town. It’s very cute. I like it most of the time.

We have a lot of coffee shops.

There are two gas stations, one drive thru coffee place, two sit down restaurant diner type places with coffee, one pop up coffee cart, one sit down cafe, and another on the way. There also might be a starbucks in the college, but I’m not 100% on that one.

Coffee is great if you like it. The cafe itself is a fun place to go, whether you’re in college or high school or an old fogey like me.

The question is, how many are sustainable? Our town population is around 5,000. The college might make up 1,500. So during the height of the academic year we still have less than 10,000 people inhabiting our town.

I’m curious if this new coffee shop will last.

Over saturation of the market is something I’m noticing more and more. (Not just in coffee shops.) I’ve noticed it in my own life and businesses.

The question is, what do we do about it? (I’m asking… please help.)
