Recently I was introduced to online auctions and it’s amazing and probably a problem.
The website I use is hibid.com. You type in your zip code and it shows you online auctions in your area. Most of them are for local pickup, but some of them offer shipping.
Some cool things I’ve purchased so far include: beautiful goblet style glasses (5 for $2), two perfect condition baby gates ($1), a vintage electric lamp ($5), a giant box of books ($5).
I have seen a piano go for $2.50, whole pieces of furniture for less than $10, artwork, collectibles, you name it. My favorite find so far was a cabinet FULL of vases and garden supplies for $2.00.
Sometimes the driving is inconvenient, and sometimes they won’t work with you on changing pickup times without charging a fee, but overall it’s the best way to get cool stuff. Way cheaper than thrifting since stores have started charging an arm and a leg for used items.
Tips: take bags or boxes with you, don’t expect them to help you load things, taking cash saves on credit card fees, keep an eye on your spam folder for invoices telling you about winning, keep tabs on when the auction closes. I’ve lost out on some killer items because I lost track of time and got outbid at the last second.
They also auction of land and houses sometimes!
