Have you ever heard of mewing? It’s kind of like face yoga and it was first studied or at least labeled by a guy with the last name of Mew. Check out this blog, https://tooth-for-a-tooth.com/, or course at mewingworld on IG for more info.
Anyway, I got interested in mewing after learning about proper tongue placement, tongue ties, and their connection to snoring.
Because I snore.
And it’s extremely embarrassing.
AND because I want to be healthy, and because I don’t trust many doctors, and because I want to take a holistic approach to health. That means no C-Pap machines for me. You do what you want, but I don’t want to use a machine.
I get panicky when my face is covered. Since I was a kid I haven’t liked anything that covers my face, whether that’s a blanket on a cold night, or a ski mask on a snowy day, or a c-pap machine blowing air on me.
Have you ever walked into the wind on a cold day? That feeling of the air being sucked from your lungs? Yeah, that’s what my experience with a cpap machine made me feel. It was terrifying.
Anyway, in my research I found an IG account that is for tongue therapy. I looked into it and decided to get a consultation. It was very interesting.
The therapist had me send in videos and photos of my teeth, tongue and mouth, and answer a survey. Then we had a video consult where she asked me a bunch of in depth questions and watched me swallow and try to move my tongue.
It looks like I have a tongue tie, and have had it for a long time. As a kid I had braces, and when they finally came off I was to wear a retainer. Unfortunately I would remove the retainer in my sleep. Sometimes it would be loose in the bed, oftentimes it would be put away in its case. I can’t sleep long term with night guards, retainers, or even mouth tape.
She said my tongue doesn’t fit well into the roof of my mouth because my mouth is small. We’re going to do some exercises to see if I can’t strengthen my tongue and build my face muscles. Right now I use my cheeks to help me swallow, when the work should all be done by the tongue.
The therapist is going to help me find a local dentist naturally minded dentist, come up with an exercise plan for my face, and down the line we might pursue adult palate expansion.
If you’re like me and you snore, or don’t get quality sleep, or get headaches, or hold tension in your neck/head/shoulders and you want something to help that goes beyond taking pills or using large bulky machines to sleep then look into a tongue therapist, or a myofacial therapist. If you shoot me a message I might even point you in the direction of mine ; )
