Defined By A Number

I know that giving someone a number instead of a name is dehumanizing, but in the case of the enneagram it’s kind of fun.

If you’re not familiar with the enneagram personality assessment, it is 9 numbers divided into the gut triad, the brain triad and the heart triad. Similar to other personality quizzes, but with different motivations. The enneagram is looking at who you are based on what happened to you as a child.

I’ve taken several quizzes and the results are typically the same. However, I have heard “professionals” say that if you like your number try again… The enneagram takes a hard look at weaknesses and it’s very humbling. I have also heard pros say that the quizzes aren’t an accurate way to describe yourself. It’s better to find several people familiar with the enneagram and ask them what number they think you are.

There are countless podcasts, social media accounts, and books talking about the enneagram, and some of them are very helpful. I personally listened to Ian Morgan Cron’s audiobooks (The Story of You, The Road Back to You) explaining the history of the enneagram and how it is actually founded on Biblical teachings. There is also a sermon series I found on youtube. I can’t vouch for the preacher or what the church’s doctrine is, but his talks about Bible characters and their enneagram number was fascinating. They also offer the most in depth enneagram quiz I’ve ever taken.
