Science was always my least favorite subject in school. As an adult I usually avoid teaching this subject. This week I took a chance and accepted an assignment for sixth grade science. I definitely earned my paycheck.
There is one student in particular who made the day so hard. I don’t know what his home life is like. It might be horrible. He might have a mental illness or a developmental delay that just makes him very immature, I’m not sure. But he needs para support and he did not have it today.
I remember this kid from elementary school. He was the angriest child I’ve ever met. He was cursing and talking about death at a young age. He spent most of the day out of the classroom, so I had very few encounters with him.
Today he has: bullied a classmate for being short, made inappropriate groaning noises and sexual sounds, called classmates “mommy” and “daddy” in a super creepy way… It honestly makes my skin crawl.
I have yet to send a child to the office, or called on the principal for help, but I was super tempted. He might only be a child, but there is something extremely unsettling about his behavior.
This is the kind of thing your children will be exposed to if you send them to public school. I’m sure it’s worse in bigger districts. Where I live it’s relatively small, with the graduating class each year having on average 100-120 students.
What would YOU do in this situation?
