Have you ever heard of the DISC model? It’s a personality type for business and sales. My dad learned about it from a job coach and brought the info home to share with us. He shared it with his employees and my mom actually talks about it all the time.
Essentially the personality types are split into four. D I S C.
- D – Dominance: Direct and Guarded, Fast-paced and Task-oriented, Focuses on Problems & Challenges, Assertive
- I – Influence: Direct and Open, Fast-paced and People-oriented, Focuses on People & Contacts, Persuasive
- S – Steadiness: Indirect and Open, Slow-paced and People-oriented, Focuses on Pace & Consistency, Supportive
- C- Conscientious: Indirect and Guarded, Slow-paced and Task-oriented, Focuses on Procedures & Constraints, Analytical
You can take the quiz here.
I have taken the quiz several times over the years and I get a pretty even blend.
30% Dominance, 30% Steadiness, 30% Conscientious and 10% Influence. I think about it like the D is type A personality, I is outgoing and attention seeking, and I don’t really understand S or C very much. My Dad is an S, and I feel bad because I oftentimes find myself talking over him. It’s rude and something I have to constantly work on. I’m very fast paced and impatient. I find myself trying to finish other people’s sentences if they talk slowly or have to make a point. Ironically enough, I talk a lot and have a very windy way of making a point, so it’s a little hypocritical.
My Dad says I’m a D because I like to be in control. The problem is, I don’t consider myself a controlling person. I don’t really care about being in control… unless it’s of myself. I like to drive places so I can leave whenever I want, I hate to be forced to participate in just about anything, and I don’t like being the center of attention. I like to be left alone. As for the rest of you, I don’t care what you do as long as it doesn’t affect me negatively, haha.
The DISC model helps with business and sales because if you can read the type of person you are selling to you know if they want info fast, to the point, simple, or if they want details and will need time to make a decision on a purchase. I think overall I want things done quickly and simply. I’m not detail oriented. I’m a task person. I’m not interested in small talk. Maybe I do have mostly D tendencies…
