Streaming Platforms

Goodness knows there are dozens if not hundreds of different streaming platforms out there. Some of them are better than others, some are more affordable than others. Here are ones I frequent and my thoughts.

Netflix: I am so glad that Netflix is releasing more and more Asian dramas/movies. My primary source of tv entertainment are K dramas and C dramas. Netflix has a wide selection. My main complaint is that the newer foreign shows made specifically for Netflix often have weird side stories that don’t add to the plot except to remind you of the platform’s stance on social issues.

Disney+: I use this because I can share my family’s log in. I use this one least of all, and I haven’t been impressed with the selection. They advertise as having several k dramas on the platform, but I have only found a couple. Maybe that’s due to our region? I’m not sure. They’re also missing several Disney classics from their selection.

Amazon Prime: Amazon is tried and true, but it’s annoying lately because they’ve added commercials and non-skip ads. I figured paying for the service would protect me from said ads, but unfortunately not.

Viki: This is specifically for asian dramas. You can find Korean dramas, Chinese dramas, Japanese dramas, some movies, and even some Thai dramas. They’re really good about uploading quickly and having the episodes translated with subtitles. I think a membership is $9.99/month.

Dramacool: This is a free streaming platform, so there are pop ups and ads galore. Once you start the episode you’re home free, but getting the player to start will require some patience. Also, I can’t guarantee the safety of this website as there is no log in or pay wall. I have a VPN and use it fine, but keep that in mind before hitting play.

Youtube: The best thing about youtube, besides paying for ad free use, is there are SO many Chinese dramas uploaded for free. Korean dramas are not usually there, at least nothing made within the last 5-6 years. You can find some older, less prominent dramas uploaded. But youtube is my source of most Chinese dramas and some Thai dramas. (Although I’ve seen them remove a lot of accounts that uploaded the Thai dramas lately. Probably something about copyright.)

Am I missing anything good? Let me know!
