I have been plagued by migraines on and off since college. (About the time I started birth control oddly enough. *sigh*) Event though I no longer take birth control, I continue to get the occasional migraine.
Different triggers can be: hormonal/cycle related, weather, extreme heat, crying, stress, lack of sleep, dehydration…
I recently watched a video where one doctor claimed 90% of his migraine patients were simply dehydrated. His recommendation is a tall glass of water and a generous pinch of good sea salt.
Well, Saturday I got up with the start of a migraine. I took about a tsp of Celtic Sea Salt and downed it with a large glass of cold water. By noon I was feeling much better.
Sometimes salt doesn’t work, sometimes it’s too late. I try to avoid medication, but when I am desperate I take excedrine migraine. If the medicine doesn’t help and the salt doesn’t help and the water doesn’t help I usually have to sleep it off. The really bad ones are only relieved when I throw up. (TMI sorry.)
Despite the different causes or triggers of my migraines they always manifest in the same place. Along the top of my head. Pretty much where my hair parts.
I got the migraine piercing and for a while I thought it helped. My doctor put me on a supplement called chaste tree or vitex which has been helping with my hormonal imbalance, so I’m hoping that will also bring relief. Though I don’t get them as frequently as I did when I was on the pill, they do pop up at the most inconvenient times.
My mom and grandma were also plagued with migraines. Grandma had to lay still in a dark room till she felt better. My mom actually prefers to get into the pool when she gets a migraine. It’s funny how the bright sun can trigger one’s migraine and heal another’s.
Last week I got a second migraine piercing. Just in case it was the left side that will help prevent migraines better. Well, it definitely HURT getting the piercing this time, so maybe it means my left side is more sensitive! Only time will tell. For now I keep a healthy stock of celtic sea salt and filtered water so my first response is a natural one rather than a medicinal one.
