My Life as a Substitute Teacher: Part 1

Getting Started

So as irony would have it I achieved my emergency substitute teacher license the same month that our local schools closed for rona. My siblings had just started Spring Break when we got the email that the rest of the school year was not going to continue. It was unlike anything we’d ever experienced.

In Kansas to be an emergency substitute teacher you don’t need a teaching degree. For your first license you need:

  • 60 credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Form 8
  • Your license the first time will last you through June 30 of that year. The renewals are in two year intervals. You apply to renew in February of the expiration year.

This job has been a blessing to me in that it’s flexible, I can work as much or as little as I want/need, and I am working in the schools I attended. While I still can’t call my former teachers by their first names, it is kinda fun. Especially when I get to fill in for a history class.

The first year I actually was able to teach rona was in full swing and there were a lot of policy changes and issues to work through.

Thankfully things are now (mostly) back to normal and I am back to bouncing between being my nephews nanny and a part time substitute teacher.
