Part 1: The road to nannying
When my baby brother was 2 years old he was diagnosed with autism. My mom did ALL the research and got him ALL the help. She reached out to a behavior consultant (we’ll call her Sue) who quickly became a dear friend.
When Sue started having kids my mom babysat for her. Every day my siblings and I would rush home from school and fight over who got to hold the baby. The little girl was SO cute, with curly blonde hair and fiery personality. Her little brother was the sweetest, most tenderhearted little boy…
When the kids were roughly 2 and 6 months (I think) I started doing some babysitting for Sue. Then, in the summers I started to nanny full time. It was one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. I would sometimes watch the kids at my parents house. We’d swim and play with the animals and all my siblings. I would take the kids to my grandparents’ house and they called them Grandma and Grandpa.
When Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer and needed surgery I took care of the kids for a week or two at a time. We would facetime their mom every night, and they’d sleep in my youngest sister’s bunk bed. I was 22 at this time. Thankfully Sue made a full recovery and she continues to work with individuals who have special needs.
